Let’s be honest—it’s summer in Florida. If a trail doesn’t involve direct shade or a stiff breeze coming off the Indian River, we aren’t walking it until late fall.
But hiding inside for 6 months isn’t the answer either. If you’re getting cabin fever from the A/C but don’t want to melt, here are two of my favorite “micro-walks” where you can soak up the water views, catch a quick breeze, and be back in your car in under ten minutes.
1. Castaway Point Park (Palm Bay)
Tucked away at the eastern end of Palm Bay Road, Castaway Point is the ultimate high-reward, low-effort spot. You don't have to trek through the woods to get to the good stuff. There’s plenty of parking right near the water’s edge.
It’s a small park, but it’s perfect for grabbing your early morning coffee and getting some outdoor time with a quick stroll. Castaway Point is in great shape after recent renovations.
I stop here often just to reset my day. It’s rare, but I have seen dolphin and manatee here. There are always pelicans working the water, and a flock of Ibis seem to have made this place their permanent home.
If you need an excuse to get out of the house for a few minutes, check it out. Recommended.
2. Fisherman’s Landing (Grant-Valkaria)
If you find yourself driving down US-1 between Melbourne and Sebastian, this 7-acre park in Grant is the perfect wayside escape. It’s quiet, historic, and incredibly peaceful. There’s always available parking in one of the two lots.
Head straight for the mature shade trees surrounding the historic Grant House (built back in 1916!). Right out front there’s a short pier with a covered pavillion. Quite often I’ve seen dolphins feeding right near the shore.
A short walk past an old boathouse and there’s another pier stretching out into the channel.
Neighborly Tip: Pack a cooler with some sandwiches and cold drinks. There’s a large covered pavilion with picnic tables right by the water. You can eat outside without baking in the direct sun.
Extend your walk an extra couple of minutes taking the loop round the open park area. Head back to your car and crank up the AC!
If you’ve never been here before it’s worth the stop. Recommended.
What’s your favorite go-to spot in South Brevard to escape the heat? Hit reply and let me know. I’m always looking for new places to explore.
